Handrail Height (Residential) are required to be on at least one side of the stairway, shall not be less than 34” and not more than 38” above the nosing of the tread.Type II are handrails that have a dimensional perimeter greater than 6 ¼” require a finger recess area on both sides of the profile (contact your Building Official for more information). If not circular shall have a perimeter of dimension of at least 4” and not greater than 6 ¼” on one side and have a maximum cross sectional dimension of 2 ¼”. Type I have a circular cross section shall have a diameter outside of at least 1 ¼” and not greater than a 2”. Handrail grip size is either Type I or Type II. ![]()
